Inhale, exhale

A student asked me today if there were any “easy rules” when it came to how to breath when doing yoga.  My answer?  Yes, and no.  There are some basic rules, but like most rules there are exceptions.  Movements that are expansive and take body parts away from the center are done on the inhale.  Movements that are contractive and bring body parts together are done on the exhale.  The most important thing is to keep breathing.  Observe the breath.  Try different things and do what works for you.  The breath is one of the few automatic bodily functions that we can also control.  It can energize, calm, or focus us.  Our job is to explore the possibilities and enjoy the practice.  Inhale, exhale.
